Alongside leading semiconductor companies and research institutes EPCOS is participating in a new European Union program known as MOBILIS (Mixed SIP and SOC Integration of Power BAW Filters for Digital Wireless Transmissions, www.ist-mobilis.org). The objective of the program is to develop miniaturized RF filters for the latest mobile phone standards and digital radio reception with mobile phones. In particular, EPCOS will contribute its know-how in BAW technology in the project. The MOBILIS participants expect to develop bulk acoustic wave solidly mounted resonators (BAW SMR) on a silicon basis, which on a single chip cover all mobile communications standards and frequency bands as well as additional services. The challenge is to develop a process that combines low insertion loss with high power compatibility as well as high linearity, low costs and a minimum form factor. Over the long term, this solution will be integrated into mobile phone chipsets as a system-on-a-chip (SOC) in order to achieve an even higher level of miniaturization.

As early as 2005 EPCOS was the first manufacturer of passive electronic components to start volume production of BAW components on the basis of 8-inch wafers. Since May this year, the company has been supplying BAW duplexers for US PCS or WCDMA band II to a leading US manufacturer of mobile phones.
