EPCOS has designed the world’s first low-loss RF filter set for use in mobile communication devices that support new MediaFLO mobile television applications. The new SAW filters (LH58D and LH58D2) are intended for channels 53 (707 MHz) and 55 (719 MHz) of MediaFLO™, which was developed by Qualcomm Inc. and is set to be launched commercially in the United States in late 2006.
The good electrical characteristics of the EPCOS filters provide for a high selectivity of the channels used. With a low insertion loss of 3.0 dB and a usable passband of 5 MHz the SAW filters effectively suppress the various mobile telephone bands. At 2.5 x 2.0 mm, with a height of just 0.8 mm, the new filters, which are available in a ceramic SMD package, are designed to meet the space requirements of mobile handsets. Samples of the new filters are available from EPCOS.
MediaFLO is designed as a way for carriers to offload data intensive video services onto a dedicated network, thus preserving their cellular infrastructures for voice calls and Internet access. MediaFLO will offer subscribers real-time video broadcasts to handsets that are enabled for the service.
