EPCOS has developed a new series of twin sensors combining two NTC thermistors or one NTC and one PTC thermistor. They are typically targeted at automotive electronics, appliances and air conditioning equipment. These sensors have been specially designed for safety-sensitive controls with a major impact on service life.
The twin sensors are currently used in booster heating for vehicles or in domestic boiler controls, for example. They enable temperature control and protection against overheating to be implemented simultaneously. Another benefit is mutual monitoring of sensors. Future applications will be found in automotive electronics for engine management, in cookers, clothes dryers and washing machines.
The sensors are available in various designs. In single-package solutions, both thermistors are very similar in their static and dynamic performance. Types in which the sensors are housed in separate packages are suitable for differential measurement or monitoring hot spots, for example.
