Surge arresters: Powerful lightning protection

EPCOS has developed the H38-A800XP, a new type of 2-electrode surge arrester with a screw terminal that is suitable for class 1 direct lightning protection. It is distinguished by a very high current handling capability of 100 kA at a shock wave of 10/350 μs. Thanks to these values, it satisfies EN61643-11. It has a typical response of 6 kV/μs at voltages below 1500 V. Typical applications are main distribution frames in industrial

power supplies.

Lightning protection of supply lines and loads is gaining in importance. More than 1.7 million lightning strikes were registered in Germany alone in 2005. In view of global warming, lightning strikes may be become even more frequent in the future throughout the world.
