EPCOS and Chinese conglomerate Xindeco have expanded their joint venture EPCOS (Xiamen). The joint venture, which was launched at the end of 2005 for the development, manufacture and marketing of screw-terminal aluminum electrolytic capacitors, has now taken over Xindeco’s entire production facility in Xiamen. This considerably expands the portfolio of EPCOS (Xiamen). EPCOS continues to hold 60 percent of the shares in the joint venture.

| Xiamen Xindeco Co., Ltd., is a conglomerate whose extensive product portfolio has included aluminum electrolytic capacitors since the end of the 1990s. Xindeco ranks as one of the largest manufacturers of aluminum electrolytic capacitors in China. The Xindeco Group has been listed on the Chinese Stock Exchange in Shenzhen since February 1997. In fiscal 2006, the group had approximately 2400 employees and posted sales of around EUR 550 million. |

Based on its position as a global market leader in aluminum electrolytic capacitors with screw terminals, EPCOS (Xiamen) was able to successfully penetrate the Chinese market. For Lie Lin, CEO of the joint venture company, this is a crucial advantage: “EPCOS (Xiamen) allows us to serve the fast-growing Chinese market with these high-quality capacitors that are made at a low-cost, local production base.”

EPCOS’ portfolio extended
Now the product spectrum of EPCOS (Xiamen) also includes aluminum electrolytic capacitors in snap-in, single-ended and SMT designs, in addition to screw terminal versions. “This adds an entire range of standard products to our broad spectrum of high-performance aluminum electrolytic capacitors,” says Jürgen Roumen, Product Marketing Manager Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors at EPCOS. “So we now offer one-stop shopping for the complete portfolio of products both to existing customers and to new customers in markets that we did not serve in the past. That simplifies sourcing and logistics for our customers and saves money.”
These new products are designed especially for use in lighting applications, as well as in frequency converters and power supplies in industrial electronics applications. Moreover, they are used in flat-screen TVs and set-top-boxes and in power supplies in base stations. “This way we can optimally support our customers as they relocate their activities to the fast-growing Chinese market,” adds Lie Lin.

Spectrum of the EPCOS Group, including high-performance models
The global product range of EPCOS includes capacitors with solder pin, snap-in, single-ended, screw and axial-lead terminals. It also features the exceptionally robust large-size series for use in automotive applications, as well as aluminum electrolytic capacitors for photoflash applications.
Spectrum of EPCOS (Xiamen) 
The initial focus of the joint venture company was the development and manufacture of a complete spectrum of screw-terminal aluminum electrolytic capacitors for rated voltages of up to 500 V and with can sizes of up to 90 x 220 mm (D x H). Depending on the exact model, these capacitors are suitable for use at temperatures of up to 125 °C. In the launch phase, the same materials and processes were employed as in the development and manufacturing location in Szombathely, Hungary. The joint venture is increasingly establishing local Chinese sources.
The newcomers in the portfolio are capacitors in snap-in, single-ended and SMT designs. EPCOS (Xiamen) will supply these products to customers in both industrial and consumer electronics.

A stronger global presence
“The new EPCOS (Xiamen) joint venture company brings us closer to our customers in Asia in the market for aluminum electrolytic capacitors,” Lie Lin notes. While EPCOS’ application and design-in center for aluminum electrolytic capacitors will remain in Heidenheim, Germany, development work is increasingly taking place at the company’s production sites in Hungary and Brazil, and now also in China.
